Clean And Repair Wooden Fence Panels Before Adorning A Fence's Exterior With Holiday Decor

Ivan May

If you have a wooden fence surrounding your property that is constructed of rectangular-shaped panels and you would like to decorate it, cleaning and repairing cracks or holes in the wood will provide your decor with a suitable backdrop. Use the tips below to clean, repair, and decorate the fencing.

You Will Need:

  • plastic sheeting
  • wood cleaning agent
  • spray bottle
  • scrub brush (nylon bristles)
  • thick, absorbent sponge
  • rubber hose
  • wood putty
  • putty knife
  • emery cloth
  • tack cloth
  • self-adhesive vinyl pictures
  • tape measure
  • pencil
  • colorful light strings
  • extension cord
  • portable power supply

Clean And Repair Wooden Panels

Use large pieces of sheeting to cover the property that surrounds both sides of the wooden fence. Pour a wood cleaning agent into an empty spray bottle. As you walk along both sides of the fence, spray the wood cleaner on surfaces that are stained or have dirt particles on them. Use a scrub brush with nylon bristles or a large, absorbent sponge to wipe surfaces that need to be cleaned.

After successfully removing residue from wooden planks, use a rubber hose to rinse the wood off with water. After the wooden panels have dried, use a putty knife to apply wood putty to panels that contain small cracks or holes. Try to level out the putty with one side of the knife so that the repaired sections have a smooth surface.

Sand Putty-Covered Surfaces And Add Decorations

After the putty has dried, use your fingertips to feel each repaired surface. If too much putty was applied to parts of the fence, move an emery cloth over the dried putty to sand it. The cloth may need to be moved back and forth several times over putty-covered surfaces. Use a tack cloth to briefly wipe sanded surfaces.

Purchase self-adhesive vinyl pictures that depict holiday scenes. Snowflakes, ornaments, or decorated trees are some vinyl pictures that will add a cheery element to your property and that will be well-received by people passing by. Before securing vinyl pictures, use a tape measure and pencil to mark the portions of the fence's exterior that you would like to cover.

Remove the adhesive backing from the first vinyl picture and press the sticky side of the vinyl against the fence. Follow suit by securing the remaining pictures to the fence. Wind colorful light strings across the top of the fence. If a power supply isn't located near the fence, plug each light string into an extension cord before plugging the cord into a portable power supply.
