Putting Up a Fence for Privacy in Your Yard

Ivan May

If you would like to put a fence around your yard to prevent your neighbors and anyone traveling past your house from being able to see right into your yard then you have some different types to choose from. The information provided to you here will teach you a few things that can help you to decide on the right type of fencing and other options that can help you choose the best option for you.

See if a wall might work

Make sure you don't want a wall instead. A couple of examples of types of walls that may work for your needs include a stucco wall or a brick wall. Walls give you privacy because they can't be seen through. They also tend to be quite strong and weather resistant.

One thing you do need to understand is there are things that can actually cause natural damage to a wall and these things include natural movement of the earth or something like an earthquake. Walls can be nice because they contain your dogs without them being able to go after anyone through cracks or spaces the way some types of fences can allow them to do. If you would prefer a fence, then a wooden or chain link fence may be a good choice.

You can put up a tall wooden fence to add privacy

You can go with a tall wooden fence. As long as you go with a solid one that doesn't have openings between the boards it will be very hard for someone to see into your yard. They would literally have to peek over the fence. If they are going to go this far, then you may have a security problem to deal with anyway.

If you decide to go with a wooden fence then you want to make sure you do all you can to protect it from the elements by treating it with special products used for this purpose. You should check for broken or rotting boards annually, so you can have them replaced as needed.

You can put up a chain link fence

A lot of people like to put up chain link fences when they can go this route because they tend to last longer and are usually a bit easier on one's finances. You may be thinking that a chain link fence isn't going to do anything at all for your privacy and you would be right, normally. However, the thing about a chain link fence is you can do things to it that will increase your privacy. You can grow vines up it, put slats through it or use bamboo rolled sheets designed for just this purpose.

When you are considering chain link you'll want to keep in mind that it does always give you the flexibility of going from using it for privacy issues to switching to a regular fence. For example, if you go to sell the house then you can revert it back to being a regular chain link fence which may prove to be an added feature that prospective buyers may like to see.
